FL FPSP Global Issues Problem Solving Component

(Booklets)

Problems to be completed:
Teams do not have to submit both practice problems; however, it is to their advantage to do so.  Teams must participate in the Qualifying Problem competition (district or open) in order to be considered for State Competition.

Originals and copies:
All work submitted must be the original work of the students.  In practice problems, coaches should make copies of their team’s cover sheet and booklet work to keep.  Making copies will also protect against the possibility of mail loss, which has happened in the past.

Colored cover pages:
For each practice booklet submitted, complete the colored cover page provided with registration materials and the original booklet.  Staple the booklet together with the cover sheets stapled on top.  Send booklet(s) to designee at the bottom of the cover sheet.

Submitting practice booklets for unregistered teams:
Teams should be registered BEFORE booklets are submitted.  Use the form on the next page to add teams after your initial registration.  If you submit a practice booklet for an unregistered team, the “Registering Additional Teams” form on the next page, plus a check or purchase order for the registration fee MUST be attached to the booklet.  These “additional” unregistered booklets (with pay attached) will only be accepted from coaches who have already registered at least one team using the official registration sheet from the website.

Mailing the booklets:
Each practice problem submitted for evaluation must be mailed First Class and postmarked on or before the date cited on the cover sheet.  Booklets must be received prior to the evaluation date to be included with that problem’s standings.  Booklets must be sent to the person indicated on the colored cover pages.

Priority mail:  Many coaches like to use Priority Mail envelopes.  The envelopes are free at the post office, and the postage is set no matter how much material you put inside.  There is one rule to remember:  if the envelope weighs more than 1 pound, it must be taken to the post office in person and cannot be picked up from a home mailbox.  Pick up three envelopes and the stamps to go with them early in the year, and you’re all set!

Evaluation sheets returned:  The evaluation sheets will be mailed back to you.  You can usually expect to receive your evaluations 3 – 4 weeks after the due date.

Team Booklet Problem Solving:
(Global Issues Problem Solving)

Under the guidance of teachers and coaches, teams of 4 students in grades 4 - 12, use the FPSP six-step model
to explore challenges and propose action plans to complex societal problems.

Teams are divided into three divisions:

Grades 4-6 (Junior)

Grades 7-9 (Middle)

Grades 10-12 (Senior)

Teams complete two practice problems and one qualifying throughout the school year.
Trained, evaluators
score student work and return it with feedback including suggestions for improvement.
The top scoring teams
on the qualifying problem are invited to Affiliate FPS Bowls, held each spring.
The winners of each respective
Affiliate FPS Bowl advance to the FPSPI International Conference in June.
