PALM BAY ELEMENTARY
CMPS TEAM WINS NATIONAL AWARD
Barbi Miller (FPS coach and FLFPSP
Board Member) was in Washington DC in September to
accept a National Award from Take
Pride in America on behalf of her Community Problem Solving Team.
This
team took first place at state and competed at International.
Take Pride in America is an
initiative of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
It
is a nationwide partnership program, which inspires Americans to
volunteer
in
caring for their public lands (including schools).
The goal is to instill an active
sense of ownership and responsibility in every citizen for natural,
cultural
and historic resources, and to
support and recognize the efforts of those who volunteer for public
lands.
Barbi’s CmPS team volunteered
through education and outreach;
encouraging their local
communities to conserve energy and recycle.
These students spent hundreds of
hours recycling in public at local festivals and other events,
sharing brochures with the public,
speaking at civic group meetings,
participating in clean-up and
beautification events, and working with their on-going recycling
of aluminum, plastic, and paper in
their school community.
The awards are presented to
outstanding stewardship projects
or awareness efforts involving
federal, state, local lands.
