Future Problem Solving and Odyssey of the Mind…

Similarities and Differences of Two Creative Problem-Solving Programs

Future Problem Solving (FPS) and Odyssey of the Mind (Odyssey) are two, distinct creative problem-solving programs that provide challenging
competitive experiences and enrich the regular school curriculum.   FPS and Odyssey both develop academic, creative and interpersonal skills.

These programs offer practice in real-world applications of standards-based school curriculum.

In FPS, teams address multiple problems throughout the school year.
These problems are built on topics researched by the students; however, at the competition, only the general topic area is known in advance.
Each year there are five topics that fall into the categories of business/economics, science/technology, and social/political.

Within FPS, the most common competitive category is the Global Issues booklet competition.
Working in teams of four, students follow a well-defined, six-step problem-solving process, resulting in a written product
and a creative presentation of their best solution.

Other components are individual Global Issues, creative Scenario Writing and Community Problem Solving.
Odyssey teams of five to seven students focus their efforts on solving a single, open-ended problem during the competition season.

Each team selects one of the five, annual Long-Term Problems and develops a solution to this problem while also solving
a separate Spontaneous Problem posed at the competition.

Solutions to problems are presented as performances with parameters previously established.
Both of these co-curricular programs are student-driven, highly motivating, and involve students in critical and creative thinking.

Participation in Odyssey of the Mind or Future Problem Solving empowers students through skill development and confidence
building to recognize they can make a difference in the rapidly-changing world.
